COLLEGE BASKETBALL

More opportunities exist than most players realize.

College basketball offers opportunities across NCAA, NAIA and junior college programs. Whether your goal is to compete at the highest level or find the college environment that fits you best, there are multiple pathways for U.S. and international student-athletes to continue playing basketball while earning a degree.

The challenge is that basketball recruiting is highly competitive. Coaches are evaluating players from high school programs, AAU and club teams, showcases and recruiting events across the country.

The players who take control of their recruitment can create more opportunities by getting their information, film and communication in front of the right coaches. NextUp helps organize that process so athletes can research programs, build their profile and proactively connect with coaches.

HOW TO GET RECRUITED FOR BASKETBALL

Talent matters. So does your recruitment strategy.

College basketball coaches evaluate players across thousands of games, tournaments, profiles and recruiting events. Make it easy for coaches to understand who you are, what level you can play at and what you can bring to their program.

01 / PROFILE

Build Your Recruiting Profile

Include your position, height, graduation year, academics, statistics, measurables and video.

02 / FILM

Create Strong Highlight Film

Keep your video focused and show game-real actions that allow coaches to evaluate your actual playing ability.

03 / EXPOSURE

Build Your Basketball Exposure

Compete in strong environments, including school, club, AAU, showcases, camps and other relevant events.

04 / CONNECT

Contact College Coaches

Send personalized communication and follow up consistently with programs that are a genuine fit.

AAU & BASKETBALL EXPOSURE

Exposure can open doors. Strategy gets you through them.

AAU and club basketball can be an important part of the recruiting process, particularly for athletes looking to compete at higher levels. But simply playing AAU does not guarantee that college coaches will find you.

Your profile, film, competition history and direct communication all work together to give coaches a clearer picture of who you are.
01
Play Against Strong Competition Seek environments that challenge you and provide meaningful opportunities to develop.
02
Keep Your Film Updated Add recent game footage that reflects your current level and development.
03
Know Your Level Build a realistic target list across appropriate levels instead of focusing only on the biggest names.
04
Turn Exposure Into Communication Put your profile and film in front of the coaches who are actually relevant to your recruitment.
BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIPS

How basketball scholarships work.

Scholarship opportunities vary by division, school and program. Athletic aid is only one part of the financial picture, and players may also qualify for academic scholarships, grants and other financial aid.

NCAA DIVISION I

Full & Partial Aid

Division I scholarship rules changed following the House settlement. Participating programs now operate under roster limits rather than the former sport-specific scholarship limits, with schools able to provide athletics aid to athletes on the applicable roster.

NCAA DIVISION II

Equivalency Scholarships

Division II uses an equivalency model, allowing programs to distribute athletics aid among multiple student-athletes.

NCAA DIVISION III

Academic & Need-Based Aid

Division III schools do not award athletic scholarships, but players may qualify for academic scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid.

NAIA

Athletic Aid

NAIA programs can provide athletic scholarships, with opportunities varying by school, program and roster needs.

NJCAA

Junior College Pathways

Junior college basketball can provide another pathway to compete, develop and continue toward a four-year college opportunity.

Important: Basketball scholarship rules can vary by division, institution and current NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA regulations. Always confirm the details of an individual scholarship offer directly with the school and its financial aid office.
WHAT COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACHES LOOK FOR

More than just points.

Coaches evaluate the complete player. Scoring ability matters, but so do basketball IQ, athleticism, consistency, defensive ability, academics, work ethic and how you fit into a team's style of play.
Basketball IQ Decision-making, court vision, spacing and understanding of the game.
Athleticism Speed, explosiveness, movement, strength and physical tools.
Position Skills Skills relevant to your position and the role you are expected to play.
Consistency Coaches want to see how you perform across games and against quality competition.
Defensive Ability Effort, positioning, communication and ability to impact the game without the ball.
Work Ethic Coaches want players who are competitive, coachable and committed to improving.
Academics Your ability to succeed academically can influence your college options and eligibility.
Character Leadership, attitude and how you fit within the culture of a program matter.
ACADEMICS & ELIGIBILITY

Your basketball career is only part of the equation.

College coaches evaluate academics alongside athletic ability. Strong academic performance can also expand your college options and potentially open additional scholarship and financial aid opportunities.
01
Maintain Your Grades Academic performance can influence eligibility and the schools available to you.
02
Understand Eligibility Learn the academic requirements that apply to your intended division and pathway.
03
Register When Required U.S. and international players should understand the applicable eligibility registration process early.
04
Keep Your Options Open Strong academics can help you evaluate more schools and more potential financial aid opportunities.
BUILD YOUR BASKETBALL RECRUITING PROFILE

Give coaches what they need to evaluate you.

Your recruiting profile should quickly communicate who you are as a player and give coaches the information they need to decide whether they want to learn more.

01 / PLAYER

Personal Information

Graduation year, location, contact details, position and relevant athletic information.

02 / MEASURABLES

Athletic Measurements

Height, position, wingspan, vertical, speed and other relevant basketball measurements.

Highlight & Game Film

Show your skills in context and make it easy for coaches to evaluate your game.
